「礼儀正しい」ということは、つまり「油断しない」ということなんだね。対面している相手が、一体どんな相手なのか、何を考えているのか、まったく分からない、自分にいかなる敵意や思惑をもっているのか分からないという認識、油断しないという態度が、礼儀正しい姿勢に出るんだ。僕も時々、仕事で不作法な人に会う。挨拶をしないとか、とても高飛車な態度をとるとか。でも、僕はそういう人にたいしては、ある種の安心をしてしまう。というのは、そういう人というのは、結局たいしたことがないんだね。不作法な態度をとるというのは、相手を見くびっているということだ。見くびるというのは、失礼である以前に、認識が甘い、ゆるい、ということなんだな。
